The Different Types of Cranes a Crane Mechanic Must Know How to Repair

Posted by Variety Staffing

One of the main responsibilities of a crane mechanic is to maintain the equipment. Crane technicians are responsible for replacing defective parts, using computerized testing tools and generating technical reports. They can work in a wide range of industries, though the most common include construction, government and equipment distribution.

Let’s discuss the types of cranes that a crane mechanic should be comfortable repairing. Things change fast in this industry. It’s important for techs to receive ongoing training to embrace the latest technology and remain competitive in their field.

Mobile Cranes

Mobile cranes are common because of their freedom and versatility. A mobile crane is mounted onto a mobile platform, such as a cat truck or rail. The boom is raised or lowered by cables or hydraulic cylinders.

Truck Mounted Cranes

Cranes can be mounted onto vehicles, giving them the flexibility to move to various job sites. To stabilize the crane, outriggers are used vertically or horizontally. The most common tasks that vehicle mounted cranes are used for include electric line maintenance and tree trimming.

Rough Terrain Cranes

Rough terrain cranes are mounted on four rubber tires, and outriggers are used to level the crane. This type of equipment is best used on construction sites that have rocky, uneven terrains, as there is no slowing them down!

Telescopic Cranes

Telescoping cranes are mobile and further enhanced with height adjustments. When goods need to be transported from one location to another, a telescopic crane makes it easy to do so.

Tower Cranes

The purpose of using a tower crane is to achieve the right balance of height and lifting power. Tower cranes are the most popular cranes in the world, and they can be fixated to the side of a building or in concrete.

Overhead Cranes

Overhead cranes are also known as suspended cranes. They are generally mounted alongside an assembly area. You’re most likely to see an overhead crane in a large factory, manufacturing plant or shipyard.

Loader Cranes

Loader cranes are hydraulically powered cranes that are fitted to a trailer and have an articulated arm. The benefit to a loader crane is that it can be folded into smaller sections, taking up less space when it’s not being used.

Cranes are powerful and used across a number of industries. Whether you are interested in being a crane technician, or you are looking to fill a position for one, call Variety Staffing for specialized staffing services. Cranes are instrumental for the construction and engineering fields – and so are the people who work to maintain them!
