A road service technician career is highly desirable for individuals who have an associate’s degree and enjoy hands-on work. Though no formal education is required, many road service techs have a two-year degree and are certified by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE). Having certification opens up the doors to additional opportunities and a larger selection of companies.
Let’s learn more about what to expect in a road service technician career and if this path is right for you.
What Does a Road Service Technician Do?
Road service technicians work on forklifts and other types of industrial equipment. The Service Coordinator receives the service call and then appoints the technician to the customer’s location for maintenance and repairs.

● Knowledge in electrical systems, cooling systems, brakes, hydraulics and engines
● Perform preventative maintenance
● Perform repairs as necessary
● Maintain batteries
● Fill out work orders
● Run computer-based diagnostics
● Comply with all safety standards and OSHA procedures
What are the Requirements?
Road service technicians must pass a background check and maintain an exceptional driving record. Many have an associate’s degree and are certified by the ASE. Depending on the company that the technician is working for, it may also be expected that they have two or more years of prior experience as well as basic computer skills.
Additional characteristics of forklift technicians include:
● Self-motivated
● Responsible and diligent
● Able to work outdoors and in poor weather
● Excellent communication
● Good coordination with the supervisor
● Flexibility with schedule changes
● Willingness to travel
