Skilled Trades Shortage Seen Nationwide
Posted by Variety Staffing
It’s becoming more difficult to hire manufacturing talent due to the shortage in skilled trades. In the United States, there will likely be about 3.5 million manufacturing jobs that will need to be filled within the next decade. Furthermore, the skills gap will unfortunately result in 2 million of these jobs remaining unfilled.
Is there a reason why our nation is seeing a skilled trades shortage? Or is a combination of factors contributing to this?
It turns out there are a couple of reasons for this decline. Let’s explore what these are and what you can do to ensure that your company runs smoothly, despite decreasing options.
Elimination of Shop Class
Shop class was eliminated from the high school curriculum years ago. While some schools still offer it as an elective course, many students are going without this exposure. With no hands-on introduction into shop and mechanical classes, students aren’t given the opportunity to spark an interest in the trades.
Great Recession
Shortly after high schools shut down their shop classes, the Great Recession hit. Many contractors went out of business and were unable to find a job in their field. Veteran workers were particularly hit hard, and many missed out on the years where they would have been training someone to take over. The construction industry alone lost 1.5 million workers during the recession.
Social Pressures
It’s hard to ignore the social pressures that have also impacted the skilled trades. Much importance is placed on having a college education, and entering the skilled trades doesn’t come with the same validation. If a student is not encouraged to pursue this route, they will probably choose a different path.
Filling the Gaps with a Staffing Company
It’s difficult to say when the skilled trades will grow. With high demand and low competition, now is an excellent time to enter this field. In the meantime, contractors are adjusting and homeowners admit they are willing to pay more.
